Welcome to Myford University . . .

I’m George Sloane—founder, Dean, and your straight-talking guide for this journey into a different kind of higher learning. Not the kind that comes with a $200,000+ price tag and a useless diploma. This is practical, applied, real-world education—the kind that gets results.

You’ll get master-class level insights in bite-sized doses, with no fluff and no filler. And while we won’t hand out official MBAs or PhDs, we’re here to earn something more valuable—what I call the “Poor, Hungry, Driven” (PhD) mentality and a “Master of Business Audacity” (MBA) attitude.

I started this while commuting in my Ford F-150—hence, the name Myford University. Podcasts, audiobooks, YouTube lectures—I devoured it all while driving. Then I realized: Why not share what I’ve learned? If my time behind the wheel can help you get ahead in your life and work, then we’ve already won.

Let’s dive in.

Today's Thesis: College Is Bullshit

Let’s not sugarcoat it.

College is bullshit.

The whole thing is broken. Overpriced. Overhyped. Over.

Once upon a time, a college degree meant something. Now? It's high school 2.0—with a massive invoice attached. And the worst part? The job market doesn’t give a damn anymore.

Big companies have figured it out. They’re no longer fooled by the paper. They want skills. They want real experience. Here’s just a small sample of companies that have said “screw it” to degrees:

Skills Over Diplomas: Just a Few Examples

Tech & IT

  • Google – They prioritize skills over degrees and offer their own career certificates.
  • IBM – Dropped degree requirements for over 50% of U.S. jobs.
  • Apple – Half their 2018 hires had no degree.
  • Microsoft, Dell, Intel – Same story. Skills first.

Finance & Consulting

  • Bank of America, JPMorgan, PwC, Accenture – Shifting to skills-based hiring, apprenticeships, and recruiting from non-traditional backgrounds.

Retail, Aerospace, Healthcare

  • Amazon, Costco, Starbucks, Tesla, CVS, Hilton, Delta, Boeing – All of them relaxing or eliminating degree requirements.

Let that sink in.

The very companies’ college grads dream of working for don’t even require a degree anymore.

The ROI on College Is FUBAR (F’d Up Beyond All Recognition)

Remember when the formula was: Go to college → Get a job → Work 40 years → Retire?

Yeah. That’s dead.

Now it’s more like: Waste 4 years → Rack up six figures of debt → Land a low-paying job → Never retire.

Meanwhile, the colleges keep hiking tuition like it’s an Olympic sport. They forgot basic economics: the more degrees you flood the market with, the less valuable each one becomes. But they keep jacking up the price anyway.

Education and healthcare are the two sectors that consistently outpace inflation, clocking in at 6–9% annual increases. Inflation averages what—2% (more lately)? And we’re supposed to accept that?

People Are Catching On

College enrollment is dropping. Especially among men.

Between 2014 and 2020, male enrollment dropped about 0.5–0.7% per year. During COVID? It cratered. In 2021 and 2022, the drop hit 1.3% and 12.4% respectively. Even 2023–2024 saw another 2.3% drop.

People are waking up.

Now let me clarify: college still makes sense for some people.

If you’re going into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math), law, medicine, or education, it’s part of the deal. You need the credential because the system demands it. That’s a different conversation, and I’ll cover it in another post.

But for most other careers?

You don’t need it. Not even close.

My Own Degrees? Yeah, I Have Some

You might be thinking, “But George, don’t you have degrees?”

Yup. Three of them:

  • Bachelor’s in Design – Syracuse University
  • MBA in Finance – Iona University
  • MS in Marketing – Baruch College (CUNY)

Did I learn stuff? Sure.

Would I do it again? Hell no.

In the last 2–3 years, I’ve learned more through self-education than I ever did in school. I’m not kidding when I say you can learn the equivalent of a bachelor’s, MBA, or PhD in months—not years—if you do it right.

That’s what this blog (and website) is all about.

I’ll show you how to get the skills and actually use them—without wasting time or money.

“But College Is About More Than Learning!”

Let me guess: You’re about to say it’s about networking, socializing, “growing up.”

Listen, there are nightclubs, meetups, mastermind groups, sports leagues, professional orgs, and adult rec kickball teams in every town in America. If you’re looking for an expensive four-year party, go for it. Just don’t come crying later about your debt and lack of experience.

Let’s grow up by learning, earning, and applying.

I Taught in College. I’ve Seen the Bullshit Firsthand.

I’ve taught at multiple colleges and universities—undergrad and grad levels.

You want the truth?

Most students were just trying to get a grade and punch their damn ticket.

I taught them more by explaining real-world concepts and models in plain English than any textbook ever could. The one thing I gained from that experience was realizing how powerful teaching is for your own learning.

Teach others. You’ll get sharper. That’s a free gem—use it.

Need More Proof? Look at These Dropouts

Some of the most successful people in history bailed on college:

Steve Jobs. Bill Gates. Mark Zuckerberg. Michael Dell. Richard Branson. Oprah. Spielberg. Tarantino. Ralph Lauren. Elon Musk (left PhD program). Walt Disney. Harrison Ford. James Dean. Lucille Ball.

You don’t need college.

You need vision, skills, drive, and the right approach.

Mike Rowe Gets It

If you don’t know Mike Rowe, fix that.

He hosted the TV show Dirty Jobs and launched the mikeroweWORKS Foundation, giving scholarships to people learning trades. He’s an advocate for real work—not fancy titles.

He understands that being a welder, electrician, HVAC tech, or plumber can beat a corporate job any day—especially when the AI robots come knocking.

I once worked with someone whose son made $70K part-time while still in welding school. The market couldn’t wait for him to finish.

The trades are in demand, well-paid, and hard to outsource. AI’s not crawling into attics or under sinks any time soon.

So What Now?

You’re probably asking: “If college is bullshit, what should I do instead?”

That’s what we’ll cover here—week after week.

I’ll teach you how to build your own real-world, high-impact, instantly usable education. Think of it like building your own:

  • Bachelor’s in Getting Shit Done
  • MBA in Business Thinking
  • PhD in Real-World Results

Here’s a sample of how I learn now:

  • YouTube rabbit holes (the good kind)
  • Smart podcasts
  • Certifications (paid and free)
  • ChatGPT for fast research
  • Reading books/articles
  • Online courses
  • Trial and error
  • Asking questions
  • Doing the damn work
  • Teaching others

In this blog, I’ll break each one down. I’ll give you frameworks, models, and methods to build your own DIY Ivy League-level education—without going broke.

Let’s Wrap This Up

Don’t keep this to yourself. Share it. Talk about it. Tell your friends, coworkers, and your cousin who’s stuck in student loan hell.

I’m George Sloane, and I’ll be your guide.

Let’s upskill—without college.

See you next time.
